Microturbines are
beginning to change the shape of sub-MW power markets. Operating
experience passed the million hours benchmark in 2001 as the industry
gears up for volume production, aiming for multi-GW annual output. The
microturbine looks se to unlock new opportunities within the
small-scale distributed generation market, and thus transform the
electricity supply business across the power spectrum. It is also a
genuine contender in the rapidly developing area of low emission and
electric vehicles, where it has already proved its worth in specialist
applications.
More than 50
organizations around the world are now developing microturbines and
their key sub-systems. Many more are involved as investors, packagers and
distributors, or are evaluating opportunities. All need reliable
information.
Information from
within the sector is often
dangerously optimistic, creating a dilemma for strategic planners and
potential investors in a highrisk area that is certain to have its share
of failures. This is compounded by:
the
pace of development - decisions made now will determine the eventual
winners and losers
technical
novelty - the concept is well-proven but not yet widely recognised and
field experience is still quite limited. Also, design variants introduce
complex technical choices
market
diversity - microturbines are aimed at a multitude of applications with
very different needs (some very specialised and others representing
multi-billion dollar markets in the automotive and power generation
industries).
EscoVale has
unrivalled experience in emerging power technologies, based on business
consultancy projects with a multi-$M aggregate value. This includes more
